LA ALPUJARRA (or Las Alpujarras) is a region of Andalusia, in the south of Spain. It includes part of the province of Granada and part of the province of Almeria, at the foot of the south side of the Natural Park of Sierra Nevada.

In ancient texts sometimes the region is called alpujarras, a name which comes from an Arabic term “al Busherat” (al-bugscharra), which could be translated as “the Grasslands” or “The Pasture Lands.”

The region mainly consists of a series of valleys which descend in a straight angle from the peaks of Sierra Nevada in the North to the Sierra de la Contraviesa and Sierra de Gador, which separate it from the Mediterranean Sea to the south.

The region is of an enormous natural beauty.

The physical surroundings of La Alpujarra, Sierra Nevada have been declared a World Biosphere Sanctuary by the Unesco, Natural Park and National Park, above all because of its botanical endemism and the special ecoculture.

The terraced form of the land makes the houses in the villages appear to be piled one on top of the other, and their characteristic flat roofs and chimneys, and balconies ("tinaos"), which extend through the steep narrow streets give it a unique picturesque appearance.

One thing which makes the region an ideal place to live is its CLIMATE. We have to take into account that despite its altitude, the sun shines during more than 250 days of the year. Because we must not forget that this “Sierra Nevada” (snowy mountain range) is close to Africa.

The GASTRONOMY of La Alpujarra has been influenced by the different cultures which populated the region. Thus, the dishes alpujarreños are based on the agricultural and cattle products to be found in the area. Its hams, sausages, cheeses, soups, stews… are well known. Without forgetting the wines of the earth that are produced in the region.

In La Alpujarra all kinds of ACTIVITIES can be practiced: hiking, routes on horseback, routes by bicycle, canyoning, mountain climbing, without forgetting that we are only 40 minutes from the coast where we can enjoy the white sandy beaches and clear water. On the other hand there is a line of buses which connect the region with the main cities of Andalusia.

ORGIVA
It is considered to be the capital of La Alpujarra, the majority of administrative procedures are carried out there. It is a 20 minutes drive from Pitres.

TREVELEZ
It is the highest village of the Iberian Peninsula, very well known for its ham and it is 20 minutes from Pitres.
