LA ALPUJARRA. The tropical Switzerland.
ALPUJARRA (or Las Alpujarras) is a district in the region of Andalucía, Southern Spain. It stretches from the province of Granada into the province of Almeria. It lies on the south side of the mountainous range of the National Park of Sierra Nevada.
Old texts often referred to this region as Alpujarras, name derived from the Arabic term "al Busherat" (al-bugscharra), which could be translated as "the Grassland" or "the Grazing Land".
The region is mainly made up of a series of valleys, descending in right angles from the mountain range of Sierra Nevada in the north to the mountains of Sierra de la Contraviesa and Sierra de Gádor. These latter ones stand between the Mediterranean sea, in the South, and the Alpujarra valleys.
This region displays great natural beauty. The area of La Alpujarra and Sierra Nevada has been declared UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Natural Park and National Park, thanks mainly to its unique eco-culture systems and its endemic plant varieties.
The cottages in the little villages give the impression to be piled up on the hill sides because of the terraced landscape typical of the area. Their distinctive flat roofs adorned with chimneys and the maze of narrow streets, covered by the tinao balconies, roofs built over the streets that link together opposite houses, produce a picturesque and quirky scenery.
